QATR AL NADA SCHOOL

The school aims to protect the environment by encouraging positive action, new ideas, and practical solutions to environmental challenges. As part of the Sustainable Schools Initiative since 2009, the school has worked on many projects linked to the Sustainable Development Goals, including clean energy, climate action, responsible use of resources, and protecting land and communities. The school’s projects focused on waste recycling, reducing air and water pollution, using clean energy, and protecting land from desertification and soil pollution. These efforts were supported by strong partnerships with the school community, local authorities, other schools, parents, and the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi. The projects helped reduce environmental impact, improve resource management, and raise awareness. Key achievements included increasing green areas to 2,475 square meters, planting 700 fruit trees in local institutions and parents’ homes, reusing 400 litters of Gray water, and reducing water consumption by 20%.
ST. JOSEPH’S SCHOOL

Since joining the Sustainable Schools Initiative in 2012, St. Joseph’s School has focused on eco-friendly practices and teaching students about sustainable living. The school ran an e-waste campaign to address the growing problem of electronic waste, linking it to UN Sustainable Development Goals like responsible consumption (SDG 12), climate action (SDG 13), and quality education (SDG 4). The campaign raised awareness through pamphlets, the school portal, and social media, encouraging the community to participate. One challenge was overcoming the “use-and-throw-away” habit, but students, teachers, parents, and the local community helped make the campaign a success. In total, the school collected 806 kg of e-waste for recycling. These projects have motivated students to act and think about the environmental impact of their daily habits.
SUNRISE ENGLISH PRIVATE SCHOOL

Since joining the Sustainable Schools Initiative in 2006, the school’s Eco-Club has focused on inspiring students to care for the environment and become responsible citizens. The school has carried out many sustainability projects both inside and outside the school, linking them to UN Sustainable Development Goals like clean water and energy, climate action, responsible consumption, and life on land. Projects include recycling programs, converting used cooking oil to biodiesel, bag-making competitions, clean-up and water-saving campaigns, field trips to environmental sites, creating an organic farm with zero chemicals, and developing an in-school hydroponics unit. Students, teachers, and parents actively participated, gaining hands-on experience and learning to think creatively and sustainably. The school has received several awards for its efforts, including the Roots & Shoots Award, Best Community Outreach at the Sustainable Excellence Award 2019, and success in environmental public speaking competitions, showing the school’s strong commitment to sustainability.
AL ITTIHAD NATIONAL PRIVATE SCHOOL

Al Ittihad School has worked to teach students, teachers, parents, and the community about making smart choices to protect the environment. Since joining the Sustainable Schools Initiative in 2011, the school focused on reducing waste through reduction, recycling, and re-use, with a special focus on single-use plastics (SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption & Production). Students ran campaigns like “Rethink Plastic” to educate shoppers and the school community about avoiding disposable plastics, using reusable bottles and utensils. The school saw a rise in students using reusable water bottles, and the kindergarten stopped all plastic bottles. By segregating and tracking waste, the school highlighted how much plastic is discarded daily. In 2018, the school recycled 5,437 kg of solid waste. Students’ awareness grew as they saw the harmful effects of plastic on the environment, motivating them to make lasting changes.
THE PHILIPPINE GLOBAL SCHOOL (Government)

The Philippine Global School plays an important role in protecting the environment by promoting sustainability, using clean energy, and going green. Since joining the Sustainable Schools Initiative in 2015, the school has carried out many projects to support the Sustainable Development Goals, including quality education, clean energy, innovation, responsible consumption, and climate action. Students learn about sustainability not only in the classroom but also through field trips and the school Biodome, which has become a center for learning about plants, animals, and renewable energy. Solar panels now power LED lights in the school, reducing electricity use, while green spaces and recycling have increased. Shared transportation and walking have grown, water and energy use have decreased, and the Biodome has inspired students, parents, and the community to act for the environment.
AISHA BINT OTHMAN PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOL (Government)

Aisha Bint Othman School has increased the number of fields trips every year, which has improved student learning and happiness. The school organized 12 field trips in 2016–2017, 20 in 2017–2018, and 30 in 2018–2019. Since joining the Sustainable Schools Initiative in 2011, the school has focused on sustainability projects that support the Sustainable Development Goals, such as quality education, clean energy, and responsible consumption. These projects help students and the local community learn about sustainability, reduce energy use, and build environmental responsibility, with strong support from school leadership, parents, and the community.
UMM AL ARAB PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOL

Umm Al Arab Primary and Secondary School works to protect and preserve the environment while giving students a better life through innovative education. Since joining the Sustainable Schools Initiative in 2014, the school has carried out social, cultural, and environmental activities to support the Sustainable Development Goals, especially responsible consumption, sustainable cities, clean energy, and life on land. The school launched sustainable farm estates to teach students and the local community about renewable energy, organic farming, and sustainable practices, motivating families to adopt eco-friendly habits. The project reached 115 families in the Al Falah region, replaced 100% of electricity with solar power in 40 farm estates, achieved 70% solar energy in 15 estates, and fully implemented the Organic Farming Initiative, creating a strong positive impact on the environment and society.
SALAMA BINT BUTTI PRIMARY SCHOOL (Government)

Salama Bint Butti Primary School has used field trips to help students grow, learn new scientific knowledge, and improve life and social skills. Since joining the Sustainable Schools Initiative in 2011, the school has focused on environmental awareness and sustainability, teaching students about natural resources, sustainable cities, health, life on land, and life below water. Field trips gave students the chance to explore the UAE’s environments, strengthen their sense of responsibility, and develop research and observation skills. During the 2018–2019 academic year, 480 Stages 1 and 755 Stage 2 students participated in these trips, which inspired them to understand global challenges and contribute to solving environmental issues.
