A green building ensures minimal depletion of natural resources during and after its construction. They have energy-saving features. They use materials that are non-toxic, recycled, and renewable. They conserve resources like water and provide healthy indoor air quality.
Buildings use important resources like land, trees, and water, and after completion, they use a huge amount of energy needed for lighting, air conditioning, and heating. The UAE’s long hot summers imply that the demand for energy-consuming applications like air-conditioning is quite high. Buildings also use large amounts of water, a scarce resource in the UAE, and generate a lot of waste.
The country’s Estidama programme introduced the best green building standards. One of the program's key components is the Pearl rating system, under which each new building in the UAE will have to follow the stipulated standards. Eventually, owners of existing buildings will also have to apply these standards.
According to a recent survey, the UAE has 869 green-rated buildings
