There are 4 key clean energy sources the UAE is exploring
The UAE is building the world's largest solar power plant in Abu Dhabi. This plant will diversify Abu Dhabi’s energy sector into renewable sources, increasing Abu Dhabi’s overall solar power capacity and promoting a greener environment through reduced CO2 emissions. The plant started commercial operations in 2019.
Did you know the UAE government is planning to use nuclear power as the main source for generating electricity? The government has a comprehensive nuclear energy programme in place which is supervised by the International Atomic Energy Agency. In 2008, the UAE also published a policy on the peaceful use of nuclear energy, emphasising safety, transparency, and security. This makes the UAE a role model for nuclear energy development for the rest of the world!
The region's first wind turbine was installed on Sir Bani Yas Island. It has a production capacity of 850 kilowatts per hour. Masdar and Abu Dhabi's Tourism Development and Investment Company (TDIC) aim to develop an onshore wind farm on this island with a capacity of up to 30 MW.
Waste-to-energy is the process of generating energy in the form of electricity or heat from the primary treatment of waste. The government has several projects underway to build plants that produce energy from the treatment of waste. These plants are being built in cities like Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and Ras Al Khaimah.
